10 Rom-Coms based in Europe to Watch When You Can't Travel

I’m not usually a major movie person, but I can’t say no to a classic romantic comedy! We are all spending a lot of time “grounded” lately and I’m definitely missing my ability to travel! What better way to cure the travel blues than by watching one of these 10 Europe related Rom-Coms for when you can’t travel.

PS. I Love You – While not set entirely in Europe (partly NYC), this has turned into a classic at my house. Who doesn’t love the idea of falling in love with a foreigner and visiting Ireland! I love to regularly visit all the filming locations in Dublin, especially Whelan’s Pub!

The Lizzy McGuire Movie – “This is what DREAAAAAAMS are made of…” …any 30 year old American woman knows what I’m talking about. Set in Rome on a school trip, The Lizzy McGuire Movie was one of those movies that made me want to take my first school trip to Europe at 18!If you don’t know what that means, then you should probably leave now.

What a Girl Wants – Taking place almost entirely in London, this has always been one of my favorites to watch when I’m missing Europe. Amanda Bynes plays a girl who runs off to London to introduce herself to her father, Colin Firth, who is a wealthy British politician. You’ll see the Millennium Bridge, Westminster (Big Ben), Picadilly, and the Tower Bridge… all things you need to feel like you’re smack in the center of London!

EuroTrip – This one is more of a comedy and it exaggerates many European stereotypes, but it’s pretty hysterical (if you enjoy American Pie type comedies). In the movie they visit quite a few countries, but the whole movie was actually filmed on location in Prague, Czech Republic, so you will definitely be able to get some of your Europe travel fix!

Midnight in Paris – For any Paris fanatics out there, this one is for you. It was filmed in scores of locations across Paris. While on a trip to Paris, Gil (Owen Wilson), finds himself taken back to the 1920’s every night at midnight and meets famous writers from the era.

Eat Pray Love – This movie has become a Rom-Com classic. Liz Gilbert was going through a divorce with her husband and decided to travel the world and “find herself”. Her first stop is Italy (to eat), but you’ll get some bonus inspo when she heads to India and Bali!

The Holiday – Arguably one of the best romantic comedies of all time, two women, suffering from disappointing love lives, switch houses for two weeks. One heads to LA and the other to Surrey, England. The small English cottage is so dreamy, it’ll make you want to book your own two week holiday to the English countryside!

Mamma Mia! – For those of you suffering from the winter blues, a sunny movie filmed on the Greek islands might lift your spirits! With the uplifting music, the deep blue water, and the sparkly white buildings, you’ll be planning a trip to the islands in no time!

The Sound of Music – The oldest movie on the list, but one of the first that gave me wanderlust as a child! Filmed in Salzberg, Austria (and surrounding areas), the images of the Alps will make you swoon.

Leap Year – Taking advantage of old Irish folklore, Anna (Amy Adams) heads to Dublin to propose to her boyfriend on the leap year. While not the most geographically accurate, you’ll experience beautiful locations such as St. Stephen’s Green and Glendalough, Wicklow.
